The water distribution of the Varothayanagar water supply scheme covers Varothayanagar, Mihindupura, Allesgarden, Selvanayakapuram, Jinna nagar and Abeyapura, all suburbs of the east port town. Beneficiaries under this project are estimated more than eighteen thousand and the scheme is also designed supply water to additional 27 thousand people in the future, NEERP sources said.

North East Provincial Chief Secretary Mr.S.Rangarajah, along with Provincial Secretaries Mr.R.Thiyakalingam (Education), Mr.A.K.Kumaraswamy (Public Administration), Mr.S.Mahalingam, (Rehabilitation and Reconstruction and NEERP Project Co-ordinator). This water supply scheme was launched to alleviate the sufferings of the inhabitants in these suburbs due to shortage of drinking water, NEERP sources said.

Varothayanagar located about five km off the east port town, is one of the fast developing suburbs.
