A Hostel for more than 50 women employees working at the Elephant Pass salterns and salt packing plants was ceremonially opened last week, sources in Kilinochchi said. The facility was built with financial support of the German Government through the German Technical Co-operation (GTZ).
The employees underwent financial hardship being unable to travel to their homes daily due to the heavy burden on transport costs from Elephant Pass to their homes in interior villages of Vanni. This facility greatly helps them to save travel, food costs, officials said. Fr Karunaratnam, Head of the NorthEast Human Rights Organization lit the ceremonial lamp and Deputy Head of LTTE Political Wing, S Thangan hoisted the Tamil Eelam flag at the opening event. Officials of GTZ, workers at the Elephant Pass saltern, several members of visiting Tamil expatriate organizations and public attended the opening event.
