Officers from nineteen police stations in Colombo, led by Deputy Inspector General (D.I.G), Poojith Wijeysundra, will begin the "Operation Cleanup" campaign Friday to confiscate to illegal firearms in possession of criminal elements including underworld gangs, sources from Police Head Office, said Thursday.
This will be a 24-hour/day operation scheduled to last about a month, sources added. Places of other illegal activities including locations where there are complaints of prostitution, child abuse and money laundering, will also be targetted, sources said. Those who are arrested will have to go through rigorous questioning and special inquiry, according to officials. Based on the operation's success in Colombo, the search campaign will be extended to other parts of Sri Lanka.
