Trincomalee carnatic exponent felicitated

Ms Vijeyakumary Thavasilingam, an exponent in Carnatic Music and the pioneer in the creation of a Music group that played traditional Tamil instruments, was felicitated for her services to the Tamil culture and fine arts at the Festival of Human Values held Sunday evening in Trincomalee St.Mary's College under the auspices of Trincomalee Sivananda Thapovanam.

Tamil Iniya Ani is a music group which uses instruments such as Nathaswaram, Thavil (drums), and other instruments without the use of any western musical instruments, sources said.

Trincomalee Sivanantha Thapovanam is running a Home for the Orphans for destitute children due to war and other natural disasters.

The children trained by two Fine Arts graduates Ms Jeyathas Prakashini and Ms Shyla staged folk dances, plays and other cultural items in the Festival of Human Values.

Mr.K.Vinayagasothi, Managing Trustee of the Thapovanam presided the event.

The chief guest Rev.Sr M.Threseranee, former Principal of the Trincomalee St.Mary's College garlanded Ms Vijeyakumary, covered her with golden shawl and presented her with a statue of Lord Natesar, sources said.

Ms Meera Pathmaraja, Co-ordinator of US Vision was the special guest. Ms Thavasilingam was the honorary guest.

Rev Theresaranee commended the services of Sivanantha Thapovanam for the services rendered to the society, especially to children who have been badly affected by war and tsunami. She praised the institute for taking concrete steps in providing education to the affected children.

Ms Meera Pathmaraja also spoke at the event. Mr.N.Chandirakanthan made the welcome address.
