Court remands one suspect in Jaffna explosives case

Mr.R.T.Viknarajah, Jaffna Magistrate Monday ordered remand for Mr.Reginald Yudithson till August 29th and released two other persons each on surety bail of Rupees 25,000/= when they were produced by the Jaffna Police for allegedly transporting explosives through Jaffna lagoon to the government controlled area, legal sources said.

Soldiers manning the checkpoint at Gurunagar fisheries jetty apprehended the three fishermen Monday morning when they returned shore after night fishing for allegedly transporting explosives including detonators and dynamites. Soldiers handed them to the Police stating that they had recovered some explosives in the boat with the suspects, legal sources said.

The suspected fishermen had told the Police that they picked up the explosives on a sandbank in the lagoon when they were returning to the shore, sources said.

However the Police produced the suspects in court on a charge of transporting prohibited items, legal sources said.

The Magistrate ordered the prison official to keep the suspect Mr.Reginald Yudithson in Jaffna remand prison. The Magistrate further ordered the police to keep the recovered explosives in their custody, legal sources said.
