TR TEC opens hightech IT center in Kilinochchi

Tamil Refugee Training and Education Center (TR TEC), an arm of United Kingdom based organization with the same name, opened its Information Technology center with four laboratories equipped with current generation computers, a media lab with audio visual equipment, a hardware lab for PC maintenance training, and satelllite based broadband internet access facilities in Kilinochchi along the A9.
"Over 200 apply for the 40 slots available for the IT courses," Amirthiny Kanagaratnam, Project Administrator for the TR TEC, said pointing out the popularity of the courses run by the institute.
With increasing demand for computer skills for various job positions in international and local NGOs working in the rehabilitation and reconstruction activities in the NorthEast, students are eager to obtain skills in an advanced laboratory setup such as that available in our facility," IT lecturer Ms Nithiya Kanagarajah said.
Every student has a computer for his or her use during the course period.
S. Jasotharan who has English and Computer Hardware diplomas is the other permanent staff at TR TEC. The Institute employs additional eight part-time and visiting lecturers.
Mr Ragunathan, TR TEC co-ordinator, said that he is gratified what his institution in UK has been able to achieve in promoting technical education in the NorthEast. "A mobile unit with a luxury coach equipped with computers is our next project. We hope to take this unit to interior villages in the NorthEast to expose all school children to latest in information technology," he said.
Information Technology course includes Introduction to IT, Word Processing, Spread Sheet, Data Base, and Introduction to Internet & Email, preparing the students to obtain Certificate given by London college of Technology and City & Guilds university (eQuals).
English course involves Writing Skill, Communication Skills development, Listening Skill, Speaking Skill, and Reading Skill development. Students are prepared for taking Certificate exams given by London college of Technology and City & Guilds university (ESOL).
