Senior TULF official protests

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 02 June 1998, 23:59 GMT]
Members of Parliament and local government bodies of the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) should resign if the Sri Lankan government does not stop the war and take steps to find a political solution to the ethnic problem within four months said the Valigamam North Pradeshya Sabha member, Mr. Paskaran (TULF), in a letter he sent today to the President of the party, Mr. M.Sivasithamparam.

Mr. Paskaran is a senior member of the TULF in the Jaffna peninsula. TULF sources in Jaffna said that there is speculation in local party circles that Mr. Paskaran is threatening the leadership with the prospect of his own resignation.

The TULF's Mrs Sarojini Yogeswaran, who was elected Mayor in January, was shot dead by gunmen last month. The Sri Lankan government has blamed the Liberation Tigers for the killing. The party is yet to appoint a new Mayor for Jaffna Municipal council.

The appointment of Mr. S. Sivapalan, the TULF's legal advisor, as the new Mayor has run into problems as a consequence of squabbling within the party said informed sources in Jaffna.
