Tigers shell Vavunatheevu SLA camp
[TamilNet, Tuesday, 02 June 1998, 23:59 GMT]
The Liberation Tigers shelled the Vavunatheevu Sri Lankan Army camp, 5 km northwest of Batticaloa by the western shore of the Batticaloa lagoon, from 7 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. today, said sources in Batticaloa.
The troops retaliated by firing mortars towards Paduvankarai, the vast western hinterland of the district across the lagoon, they added. SLA sources said that the troops did not suffer any casualties. The shelling of Vavunatheevu camp is believed to be a diversionary tactic by the Tigers prior to launching a bigger attack, said SLA sources. The Vavunatheevu camp was overrun by the Liberation Tigers in March 1997. They said that the camps in the area have been put on alert. Meanwhile, the Voice of Tigers said in its night broadcast that one member of the Liberation Tigers, Lt. Janarthanan (Rasalingam Sivanathan, Muthur) died in a clash with the Sri Lankan Army in Muthur, Trincomalee district, on May 31.
