[TamilNet, Wednesday, 03 June 1998, 23:59 GMT]
The Deputy Mayor for the Jaffna Municipal council(JMC), Mr. Thambapillai Thirunavukkarasu resigned from his position today. He sent a copy of his resignation letter to the Uthayan, the only Tamil daily in Jaffna, around 9 p.m.
In his letter he states- "I accept sincerely the Tamil people's struggle for their freedom. I will give up
the luxuries of life and support them. I also urge the Tamils to support it." Mr. Thirunavukkarasu thanked all those who gave him support during his short endure
as Deputy Mayor for the JMC. He told reporters at a press conference held at the Jaffna Mayor's office at Nallur,
this morning that it was a military rule in Jaffna and not civil administration. What
the Tamil people want is to live in freedom and not a life under the military
administration. He also said that the JMC administration was set up on the basis of the TULF's wrong
arrangements. Even when I was the Deputy Mayor, I did not enjoy the freedom of life. I do not want to
live as a slave, he said further.
