Grenade injures Senior Police Officer

An Assistant Superindentent of Police (ASP), Shanthikumar, was critically wounded when a grenade was lobbed at his car today around 1.45 p.m. in Colombo, said police sources there when contacted by Tamil Net. The incident took place near Chetti Street-Kochchikkadi police check post.
The Police believe the Colombo's underground gangsters carried out the attack on the Police officer. Mr. Shanthikumar had been admitted to the Colombo hospital. Meanwhile an electricity transformer was destroyed in an explosion in the western coastal town of Negombo, south of Colombo, today around 5.30 a.m. Some houses in the vicinity were also damaged in the explosion, said police sources in Colombo, when contacted by Tamil Net. Several transformers and telecommunication exchanges have been destroyed in similar blasts in recent times. No one has claimed responsibility for the blasts.
