Mannar court releases refugee returnees from TamilNadu

Mr.A.S.Johnthasan, Mannar acting Magistrate Saturday ordered surety bail for one person and released ten others when Talaimannar Police produced eleven refugees who were taken into custody by the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) when they were returning to Sri Lanka from South India Friday, legal sources said.

The Talaimannar Police objected to the release of one person from Uyilankulam stating that he was not a refugee as he had gone to South India last month illegally by boat.

The court, however, released that person on surety bail for 10,000 rupees, legal sources said.

Seven persons of the ten released were from Grandpass and Madampitiya, suburbs in Colombo city who sought refuge in South India during the 1990 displacement.

Other three were from Mannar and Vavuniya, legal sources said.
