Security concerns for Jaffna TULF members

[TamilNet, Saturday, 13 June 1998, 23:59 GMT]
Mr. V. Anandasangaeri, Vice President of the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) has appealed to Brigadier Susantha Mendis, the Jaffna Brigade Commander, to provide security for the TULF members in the Jaffna Municipal Council (JMC) and other party members in the Peninsula, said TULF sources in Jaffna.

Mr. Anadasangaeri had pointed out that the assassination of Jaffna Mayor Mrs. Yogeswaran, the murder of Mr. V. Namasivayam, Vice President of the TULF's Jaffna branch, and the resignation of 5 Jaffna Municipal Council members occurred as a result of security negligence, the sources said.

The Brigadier has assured Mr. Anandasangeri that adequate security will be given to TULF members.

Meanwhile the TULF has sofar submitted names of 4 new candidates to the Commissioner of Elections to fill the vacancies following the resignation of 5 councillors.

They are: Shanmugam Aavinthan, 30, Nadarasa Raviraj, 45 , Kathirkamar Sinnathurai, 53, and Thambirasa Mukunthan, 25.

The new Mayor for the JMC, Mr. Sivapalan is expected to assume duties on June 29.
