Three students have been expelled and another suspended, for one year, from the University of Peradeniya for ragging Mr. Varapiragash, a junior student, to his death, said sources at the University. Mr. Varapiragash died in a Colombo hospital in October last year due to kidney failure that developed following the severe ragging.
The action against the students is said to have been taken following recommendations made by an independent commission that was appointed by the University Vice-Chancellor to investigate the death of Varapiragash, the sources said. The suspended student will also lose his financial assistance from the University for the period. Mr. Varapiragash was first year engineering faculty student of Peradeniya University in Kandy. The commission was chaired by Prof. Nimal Senanayake, Dean of the Medical Faculty. The other members of the commission were Dr. S. Mahalingam and Dr. Prasath Amarathunge. However, another student who was also involved in the ragging has not appeared at the commission. His were abouts are not known, the sources added. Police investigations into the death of Varapiragash are still continuing.
