HRCSL to formulate Rights education policy for Sri Lanka

[TamilNet, Sunday, 04 December 2005, 16:52 GMT]
The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) has been conducting a series of seminars with the aim of formulating a national level human rights education policy. The first seminar was held in Vavuniya Thursday, the second in Trincomalee Friday and the third in Batticaloa Saturday, HRCSL sources said.

More seminars are scheduled to be held in Matara on December 6, Badulla, December 7, Amparai and Kandy on December 8 and Anuradhapura on December 9.

The national event of the International Human Rights Day, which falls on December 10, will be held in Colombo. It is expected that the HRCSL would reveal its national human rights education policy on that day, HRCSL sources said.

Ms. Samanthi Manama, HRCSL Director of Education said that there is no HR education policy in Sri Lanka currently. Hence people are ignorant of their human rights and live amid violations of such rights. The objective of the HR national education policy is to instill the human right concept in every one's heart through students, sources said.
