Thirty two families who lost their houses due to recent floods in Akkarayan area in Kilinochchi district received temporary housing funded by the UNICEF and implemented by Akkarayan Development Organization (ADO) at an event held Tuesday 1.15 p.m., sources in Kilinochchi said. ADO president S Krishnapillai presided the event.
At the start of the event Skanthapuram Grama Sevaka K Mahendran, FORUT representative and Akkarayan South Indian Church's Rev Soundaranayagam, lit the ceremonial lamp. "Tamil Rehabilitation Organization (TRO) and ADO transported the 175 flood affected families to higher grounds during the floods and provided them with food and other essential items. We appreciate the assistance given by the Grama Sevaka offices and the South Indian Church during this period. OXFAM provided financial support for getting other essential items for the families. The 32 families who lost their houses now have a place to live. We will provide land and a more permanent housing for these families soon," said TRO's Assistant Director for Akkarayan, K Nalliah speaking at the event. FORUT representative told the families that in addition to permanent housing, her organization will also build latrines and wells for the new settlement.
