Jaffna University staff take strike action

A token strike staged by the Jaffna University Workers' Union yesterday, to demand that a risk allowance be incorporated into their salary, brought the University to a standstill, said sources in Jaffna.
Around 500 members of the non academic staff took part in the protest saying that a similar allowance was paid to their counterparts in the Eastern University ( in Batticaloa ) and the South Eastern University ( Ampari ). The Union was supported by Jaffna University Clerical and Technical Officers Union and Executive Staff Union. The strikers said they were forced to resort to strike action as earlier requests for the payment of the allowance had come to no avail. They apologised to the students and university community for the inconvenience caused, but said they had no other alternative but to stage a token strike to draw attention to their demand. The token strike was supported by the majority of workers in the non-academic section in University, the sources said.
