Pattalipuram tsunami hit families receive livelihood assistance

Save the Children, a non-Governmental Organization, has provided financial support to 232 families affected by tsunami in Pattalipuram in Muttur under an income generation project formulated by the Pattalipuram Poonchcholai Peoples' Development Organization (PPPDO), sources in Trincomalee said. The last phase of the project concluded on Monday with the disbursement of about 4.9 million rupees to the beneficiaries.

During the first phase of the project about 2.6 million rupees were disbursed among the beneficiaries, sources said. Under this project 203 families were provided with assistance of 36 thousand rupees each for paddy cultivation, other families were provided 26 thousand rupees each for goat-rearing, 22 thousand rupees for poultry, 18 thousand rupees for home gardening and 25 thousand rupees for small scale business activities, said organizers of the event. Beneficiaries were required to they should deposit half the amount they receive once their projects turn profitable. Head of PPPDO, Mr.S.Ganesh, presided over the event. Mr.K.Lavan, an officer of the Trincomalee District Youth Development Organization, which provided help in the implementation of the project, made the welcome address, sources said. Mr.Gowritharan, Save the Children -Sri Lanka official in Trincomalee, Mr.Chandralingam, Grama Sevaka Officer and Mr.Elilan, LTTE Trincomalee district political head, spoke at the event.
