Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers cordoned off and searched central Vadamaradchy villages of Alvai, Vathiry and Karaveddy Thursday morning, sources from Jaffna said. During the house-to-house search operations SLA also ransacked and caused damages to the Liberation Tigers' Political office located in Vathiry area, sources added.

No suspicious items or weapons were discovered from the search, sources said.

Grama Sevakas of two local villages were allowed by the SLA commanders to accompany the SLA troopers during the search operation, according to residents whose houses were searched.

Office buildings of the LTTE Women's Political Wing, and the office of Tamil Resurgence Consortium were also destroyed by the SLA soldiers, according to local residents.

SLA soldiers have been targetting Political offices of the LTTE located in different locations in Jaffna district for the past several weeks.

Members of LTTE political wing vacated Sri Lanka Government controlled areas of Jaffna and other districts a few months ago after Sri Lanka Army intelligence operatives assisted by paramilitaries killed several members of the LTTE political wing.

Meanwhile, tension prevailed in Kopay and surrounding areas following several sounds of explosions heard throughout the area Thursday morning. It later transpired that sounds were due the mine disposal unit of Halo Trust difusing and destroying mines with explosives in Tharavai area in Kopay and the situation returned normal, sources said.
