Vavuniya SLA trooper kills himself

Premaratne Bandara, a Sri Lanka Army (SLA) trooper attached to the Kolluveli SLA camp, fatally shot himself at 4.30 p.m. Saturday, Vavuniya police said. Mr Bandara belongs to the armoured vehicle division of the SLA, military sources said.

The motive behind the suicide is not known. Vavuniya police said they are investigating the death.

Kokkuveli military training camp is located 4 km north of Vavuniya town.

Meanwhile, Vavuniya police recovered an unidentified body of a male Saturday morning at Koolankulam area in Vavuniya.

The police, on receiving information from local residents, had rushed to the scene. Police said initial investigations indicated that the man was first beaten to death and his body was later dumped in Koolankulam.

Police said they are conducting investigations into the killing.
