Major political parties to file nominations Wednesday

Major political parties, the ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA),
main opposition United National Party (UNP), Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna
(JVP), Tamil National Alliance
(TNA), Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC), and Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC)
are to submit their nomination lists from Wednesday to contest the
330 local authorities, which include 18 municipal councils, 42 urban
councils and 270 pradesiya sabahs, election department sources said.
The nominations close on Thursday noon at 12. District Returning Officers
at district level in their offices would accept nominations from authorized
agents of registered political parties and independent groups that have
made required deposits within the stipulated period, election department
sources said. The date of election will be announced by the Election Commissioner with
the closure of acceptance of nomination lists. The election to all 330
local authorities will be held on a single day in March,
election department sources said. 235 independent groups have paid deposits till Tuesday. No political party has submitted nomination lists till Tuesday evening, election department sources said.
