Verugal PS Chairman, Deputy to be appointed within 7 days

Mr.M.M.S.K.Bandara Mapa, Trincomalee District Assistant Commissioner of Elections has written a letter to the General Secretary of the Ilankai Thamil Arasu Kadchchi (ITAK) to nominate two candidates for the post of Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Verugal Pradesiya Sabah in the Trincomalee district within seven day's period, on or before February 23, sources said Friday. ITAK was elected unopposed to the Verugal PS when the final date of nomination closed on Thursday, election department sources said.

Mr.M.M.S.K.Bandara Mapa, who is also Returning Officer for Verugal PS in his letter to Mr.Mavai Senathirajah, General Secretary of the ITAK has stated that according to the Election Laws, the party should nominate the names of two candidates for the posts of chairman and vice-chairman within seven days. If they fail, the returning Office is authorized to nominate the first two persons found in the nomination lists submitted by the party or independent group for these respective posts, sources said.

Verugal PS is the only local authority in the island uncontested when the nominations closed Thursday for 270 PS, 42 urban councils and 18 municipal councils.

Elections to the other 269 councils are to be held on March 30th, election department sources said.
