Tsunami affected families protest in Kalmunai

Hundreds of tsunami affected families in Kalmunai held a demonstration in front of the Kalmunai Muslim Divisional Secretariat (DS) Wednesday from morning demanding that they should be provided with permanent houses, compensation and other relief measures. Protestors cooked their food in front of the DS office while continuing the protest, sources said.
Demonstrators shouted slogans and carried placards. They said they are not prepared to lead refugee life anymore languishing for more than a year in temporary huts and in other structures. The protested demanded that the authorities should take immediate steps to provide monthly dole of five thousand rupees continuously which has been suspended after few months. Protesters also wanted the Government Agent of the Amparai district to visit them and to receive their memorandum. But till three p.m. the government agent did not visit the site where the protest being held, sources said.
