Kalmunai protest enters third day

The sit-in-protest campaign by several hundred tsunami affected families in front of the Kalmunai Divisional Secretariat (Muslim division) entered third day Friday and the DS office did not function as the Divisional Secretary and employees were prevented by protestors from entering the office, sources said.

Protesters spent their second night in the front of the DS office.

For the last three days, the protesting families have been cooking their food in the premises of the DS office. One protestor said they were still waiting for the arrival of the Amparai district Government Agent to visit them and to hear their grievances, sources said.

Tsunami hit families in Kalmunai and its suburbs and now languishing in temporary huts and makeshift structures are demanding that they should be provided with permanent houses and related relief assistance without delay.

"Housing Minister go home if your are not able to provide us with permanent houses," one of the placards held by protesters said.
