The condition of Douglas Devananda is improving rapidly said ex-militant sources in Colombo today after visiting him at the Colombo National Hospital. Mr. Devananda was moved from the intensive care unit yesterday night, they added.
They said Mr. Devananda was speaking to visitors yesterday. They added that Mr. Devananda remembered clearly what had happened to him at the Kalutara prison when he was attacked by a group of detainees. He said that only a couple of them were really involved in the attack. Mr. Devananda had visited Kalutara prison June 30 to meet with detainees who had completed a hunger strike over their lengthy detentions without trial, demanding that they be charged with a crime, or be released. Mr. Devananda is said to have been surrounded and attacked by nearly 15 detainees, and suffered serious injuries as a result.
