Soldiers arrested in Jaffna

The Military Police has arrested two soldiers of the Vadamaradchi Brigade for allegedly killing a civilian, Nicholas Pillai Robert Wellington (33) on Tuessday after detaining him at a checkpoint at Madaththadi, between Nelliyadi and Manthikai, on the Jaffna-Pt. Pedro Road, 23 km from Jaffna, said sources in Jaffna.
Dr. K. Kathiravelupillai the Judicial Medical Officer (JMO) who did an autopsy after the body was handed over by the SLA at the Manthikai Hospital said Wellington had died of gunshot wounds and severe assault. Following this T. Vignarajah, District Judge, Jaffna pronounced that the man had been murdered and issued an order that the suspects be produced in court for an inquiry.
