The Muttur Pradesiya Sabah (PS) in its first meeting held Monday unanimously adopted a resolution condemning the three-pronged attack by the State armed forces on Muttur villages last month, which killed fourteen civilians and wounded 47. About fifty-four civilian houses and thirty schools were damaged. About forty thousand were displaced. Schools and hospitals in the affected area are not functioning since then, sources said.

Mr. M.Sounthararajah of Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kadchchi (ITAK) who is also the opposition leader in the council proposed the motion and Mr.M.S.Rajees of the ruling Independent Group seconded it.

Mr.K.M.Thowfeek, Chairman of the PS resided.

Muttur PS is the only local government institution in the country administered by an independent group.

In the election held on March 30 for the Muttur PS, the independent group led by former Trincomalee district Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) parliamentarian Mr.K.M.Thowfeek captured seven out of the eleven seats. The rest went to the ITAK, sources said.
