The Commissioner of Elections Tuesday at a conference announced that elections to two local bodies, Vavuniya Urban Council (UC) and Vavuniya South Pradesiya Sabah (PS-Sinhala division) have been postponed for a period of four months, as the current security situation in the Vavuniya district is not conducive to hold such poll, sources said.
Returning Officers of the districts of Vavuniya, Batticaloa and Amparai attended a conference held in the office of the Department of Elections to decide to hold elections to local bodies in these three districts. Mr.Dayananda Dissanayake, Commissioner of Elections presided. Representatives of the State armed forces also attended the discussion, sources said. Considering all reports pertaining to the security situation in these districts, a decision was taken finally to put off the polls in the Vavuniya district for another four months and to hold elections in the districts of Batticaloa and Amparai as scheduled on May 20 along with some more local government institutions in the south of the country including the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC), sources said.
