Meeting between Jaffna Government Agent (GA), representatives of the non-Governmental Orgnizations, and Allaipiddy refugees Thursday afternoon around 3 p.m at the Allaipiddy St. Philips church, ended inconclusively with the GA and NGOs unable to provide guarantees of safety to the Allaipiddy displaced, sources said. Families from the islets have sought refuge in the Church following the 13th
Saturday Allaipiddy assassinations alleged to have been carried out by the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) and its
paramilitary men,.
Mr. K. Ganesh, GA Jaffna and the officials of UNHCR, UNICEF, UNDP,in Jaffna and representatives of the Sri Lanka
Monitoring Mission (SLMM) in Jaffna were present at this meeting, added the sources. The refugees pleaded to be moved out of the islets
which are under the full control of the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN). Half of them wanted to be taken to Jaffna town and the others implored to be transported safely to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil eelam (LTTE) controlled Vanni, said NGO officials. The GA and the NGO officials, however, said that they cannot
guarantee their personal safety or comply with their pleas to
relocate because of the current insecure situation in the Jaffna peninsula, added the sources. They, however, assured the refugees that they will take steps to meet their immediate basic needs.
