UNICEF's indifference to Children's killings, regrettable- Sithamparanathan

Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarian for Jaffna district, Ms Pathmini Sithamparanathan Friday accused the UNICEF Colombo office for issuing a irresponsibly crafted, perfunctory press release that avoided even mentioning the names of the child victims of Allapiddy extrajudicial killings, said sources in Jaffna. Amnesty International had said it received credible reports that Sri Lanka Navy personnel and armed cadres affiliated with Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP), were present at the massacre site on Kayts islet.

"UNICEF meticulously documents thousands of names of under-age children, and their pertinent details accusing the Liberation Tigers of child recruitment. Even recently published report with name and other details of a 17-year old youth who was killed in a claymore attack as member of the Liberation Tigers.

"Reasons for UNICEF's silence when several children were killed on the 25-26th aerial bombardment of Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) in Muttur East, and then adding this detail with the Allapiddy incident press release, are also not clear, Ms Sithamparanathan said.

"I urge the UNICEF Geneva offices to look into this matter and take corrective action," the parliamentarian told the media.
