Local election results strengthen SLMC- Rauff Hakeem

"Every time moves are made to weaken us, we emerge stronger. This time too the election results prove that the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) is the undisputed representative of the Muslims in Sri Lanka. In the local elections held Saturday for twenty council the SLMC consolidated its position as the principal Muslim party in Sri Lanka by capturing power in six out of the 20 local councils," said Mr.Rauff Hakeem, leader of the SLMC Sunday in a press release.

Mr.Rauff Hakeem further said in Batticaloa district the SLMC secured power in the Kattankudy Urban Council (UC) and Eravur Pradesiya Sabha (PS) contesting as independent group under the Telephone symbol. In addition to these local councils, the SLMC under the party's Tree symbol clinched power
in four councils in the Amparai district, Kalmunai MC and PS of Ninthavur, Addalaichchenai and Pottuvil. In Saturday election, the SLMC won ten of nineteen seats in the Kalmunai MC, seven out of nine seats in Addalaichchenai PS and five out seven in Pottuvil PS in the Amparai district. In Batticaloa district it bagged six of the nine seats in the Kattankudy UC and five of nine seats in Eravur PS. "SLMC also secured four seats in the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) contesting under the Butterfly symbol," Mr.Rauff Hakeem added. At the first phase of local council elections held on March 30, the SLMC captured power in Sammanthurai PS in the Amparai district by winning 08 of 12 seats. SLMC captured power of Kinniya UC, Kinniya PS and Kuchchaveli PS along with UNP and secured the post of Chairman of Muttur PS under a combined list by winning seven of member-council, Mr.Rauff Hakeem said in the press release.
