The District Secretary (DS) of Kilinochchi District, T. Rasanayagam made an urgent appeal for 3.2 million rupees from the Provincial Ministry of Rehabilitation and Reconstruction to purchase cadjan and other material for the displaced persons in Kilinochchi before the forthcoming northeast monsoon season, said sources in Trincomalee. The north-east monsoon is expected to set in by October.
The DS requested 1000 cadjans to re-thatch the huts of the welfare centres where the displaced live, and building materials to construct three sheds. He has also asked for 5000 new mats and the wherewithal to sink six tube wells, said sources. It is customary for the welfare centres housing refugees to ask for extra cadjan, polythene sheets, blankets etc., from the State and Provincial relief and rehabilitation agencies, as well as non-governmental organisations (NGOs), to ward off the ills of the monsoon that lashes Sri Lanka's north-east from October to January.
