"Killings of Tamil civilians continue unabated in the NorthEast. Thousands have fled and many are fleeing their villages fearing safety to their lives due to harassment of security forces, and instead of taking constructive steps to allay fears of Tamil people, the Government of Sri Lanka is taking steps harmful to the welfare of Tamil people," said the leader of Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentary group R. Sampanthan during a press briefing held at the Sri Lanka Parliament building Wednesday noon, sources said.
"Without making efforts to fullfil agreements made in Geneva-1, Sri Lanka Government and the extreme Sinhala Nationalist forces are relentlessly campaigning for the proscription of the Liberation Tigers by the European Union," said Mr Sampanthan. Jaffna TNA member of parliament and Deputy leader of TNA parliamentary group, Maavai Senathirajah, TNA parliamentarians Suresh Premachandran, Raviraj, Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam, S Kajendran, Kanagasabai, Pathmanathan, Sivasakthi Anandan, Noharathalingam, Sivanesan, Ms Thangeswary, and Eelavandan participated in the press briefing. "Recent violence against Tamil people reinforce the belief that Tamil people cannot depend on the Sri Lanka Government or its military forces to provide security. We have to strengthen ourselves to safeguard our own security," Sampanthan said. "Tamil people have lost all faith in the Sri Lanka Government," Sampanthan added.
