Two unidentified persons died in a grenade explosion at Sangiliyan Road in Nallur, 5 km northeast of Jaffna town, around 12:45 p.m., yesterday, said sources. Their bodies have been handed over to the Jaffna hospital, they added.
Sri Lankan security forces said that the men, believed to be members of the Liberation Tigers, committed suicide by exploding grenades they were carrying on their persons, when the army mounted a cordon and search operation in the area. Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka army (SLA) refused the Tamil Eelam Liberation Organisation (TELO) permission to commemorate Black July with meetings in the Vadamaradchi region, citing Ministry of Defence (MoD) regulations, said TELO sources in Jaffna. Two meetings to be held at Nelliyadi and Valvettithurai on Sunday were not allowed, said Robert, the TELO s head in the Jaffna District.
