Unknown gunmen shot and killed two men alleged to be members of the Eelam Democratic Peoples Party (EPDP) paramilitary group Tuesday morning while walking out of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) camp in Velanai in the Jaffna islets, said sources of Jaffna. The two men died on the spot.
EPDP sources said that the men killed were supporters of their party and not members. Kayts magistrate Mr. Jeyaraman Trotsky visited the site Tuesday morning to the site where the bodies were lying, informed sources. Meanwhile two unidentified gunmen riding on motorbike lobbed hand grenades injuring a Sri Lanka Army (SLA) trooper engaged in security duty Tuesday around 10.45 am in Amman Veethy region near Kantharmadam in Jaffna, said sources in Jaffna. The attackers escaped on their motor bike after the explosion. The trooper was rushed to Palaly military hospital with severe injuries, sources added. The SLA troopers indiscriminately fired after the attack, cordoned off and searched the area, but no one was arrested, sources said.
