SLA hinders school rehabilitation work in Jaffna

Swiss Agency for Development and Cooporation (SDC), which is
running a post-conflict school rehabilitation programme in Jaffna,
has written letters to the Government agent of Jaffna and the
Military commander of Jaffna, informing that due to army
harassment SDC is considering suspending school rehabilitation work at Hartley college and Methodist High Girls school which lie within the High Security Zone (HSZ), sources from Point Pedro said.
The SLA soldiers who guard the sentries, have
been subjecting the building contractors and building workers, who
enter the HSZ to do rehabilitation work at the schools,
to long delays, and very often refuse admission for the workers, the SDC letter said. The Sri Lankan military authorities were also not cooperating in
the removal of land mines buried in the surrounding area, the letter added. The SDC, the Switzerland's international cooperation agency, which
has its Jaffna headquarters in Nallur, began the rehabilitation work
at the two schools from the beginning of this year. It is continuing
with its post-conflict school rehabilitation programme in other parts
of Jaffna, said sources in Jaffna.
