Armed men abduct civilian in Eravur

A Savukadi resident, Subramaniyam Krishnamoorthy, 28, was abducted by armed men travelling in a white-van at a play ground in Savukadi a hamlet of Thalavi in Eravur at 6:20 p.m. Friday, residents complained to the Eravur police. The abductors took his motorcycle with them. Mr Krishnamoorthy was about to leave the play ground after playing soccer when he was abducted, sources said.

Eravur police are conducting investigations into the abduction.

White-van abductions, widespread within the military controlled areas in the north and east, are carried out by Sri Lankan Army soldiers and collaborating paramilitaries, and majority of the abductees are killed after torture and interrogation, residents allege.

Meanwhile, further north, in Sithandi unknown gunmen at around 11:30 p.m., Saturday hijacked a car without passengers after forcing the driver to drive to a back street and tying him up to a tree, residents registered a complaint to the Eravur police Sunday.

Sithandi and Thalavi are located 16 km. and 14 km northwest of Batticaloa town.
