Girl attempts suicide after rape

[TamilNet, Friday, 31 October 1997, 23:59 GMT]
A girl who was abducted and found the next day near her house tied up and unconscious in Nayanmarkaddu in Jaffna recently was admitted to hospital on Wednesday Oct.29 after attempting to commit suicide by consuming a large quantity of kerosene.

She was released from hospital today. The girl, Chandrika, was admitted to hospital following the earlier incident in which she was allegedly raped by several men. However, the medical report said that she had not been sexually assaulted.

A source in Jaffna said that there is suspicion on the part of those who took up Chandrika's case with the authorities that the doctor's report might have been produced under some pressure from interested parties.

Chandrika lives alone with the her father in Nayanmarkaddu.

However, a Tamil party source in Jaffna said that the girl is now refusing to go back home. He also said that some links of her father who is said to be a heavy Kassippu (illicit liquor) drinker have to investigated first before coming to any conclusion as to the girl's future.

He pointed out that the girl's version of the incidents is yet to be heard properly.
