Bodies of three civilians from Varani in Thenmaradchy district, two from the same family who died in artillery attack by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) on 11 August, and a youth who was shot dead by the SLA on 13th August, were exhumed and given a decent burial after proper post-mortem examinations were carried out, sources in Jaffna said.

Sithamparapillai Karalasingham, 52, and his wife Thavalohanayaki Karalasingham, 51, were killed by an SLA shell, and Balasundaram Gnanarupan, 20, was allegedly shot dead by the SLA during three days of intense clashes between the SLA and the Liberation Tigers from 11 August to 14 August.

The bodies buried under emergency situation were exhumed under the direction of Chavakachcheri Magistrate Annalingam Premshankar Saturday, and were buried after post-mortem examinations and investigations Saturday, legal sources said.

Twelve civilians were killed during the three of fighting in August in Varani and surrounding villages.
