EPDP members attacked in Valaichchenai

[TamilNet, Saturday, 04 November 2006, 00:12 GMT]
Unknown assailants hurled hand grenades at the cadres of the paramilitary Eelam Peoples Democratic Party (EPDP) selling "Thinamurasu", a weekly paper printed by EPDP, at Kanagaretnam road junction in Valaichchenai Police division in Batticaloa district, around 10:30 a.m. Friday, sources said. No one was injured in the attack.

SLA soldier and EPDP members beat youths passing through the junction, and searched the houses located near Kanakaretnam road junction, local residents said.

The paramilitaries operating with the SLA in the Valaichchenai Fishing Harbor Army camp used to force people traveling in buses, minibuses, motorbikes and bicycles along the Valaichchenai- Kalkudah road to buy the paper, sources said.

Valaichchenai is situated 27 km north of Batticaloa.
