Due to Sri Lanka Army (SLA) attacks on Vaharai area, 16 schools in Vaharai circuit of Kalkuda Educational Region in Batticaloa are unable to conduct their year-end examinations, affecting 5500 students, Vaharai Circuit Educational Director, N. Gunalingam, said.

Though year-end examinations were held Thursday in Kalkuda Educational Circuit schools, students in Vaharai Educational Circuit were prevented from sitting the examination because of the continuing SLA shell and artillery fire on Vaharai area, the director added.

Only schools in Alankulam and Punanai in Vahari circuit area are conducting the year-end examinations.

Kalkuda Regional Director of Education U. L. M. Jeinudeen said that alternative arrangements are being made to promote students to the next year grades in Vaharai circuit schools.

The fifth grade scholarship examination in Vaharai area schools were disrupted by SLA attacks on the area despite two attempts made by the educational authorities, teachers in Vaharai said.
