The Sri Lankan army spokesman Brig. Sunil Tennekoon confirmed this morning that the Monara airline that runs a service between Jaffna and Colombo had received a note from the Liberation Tigers asking it to cease operations forthwith.
He was addressing the media at the weekly cabinet press briefing held today from 11 a.m. to 12 noon at the People's Bank training centre in D.R Wijewardena Mawatha in downtown Colombo. The spokesman said that the airline did not fly to Jaffna today and is considering its next step in view of the threat posed by the LTTE's note. The Brigadier said that the other airline Lion Air had not received a similar note from the LTTE to cease its operations. Meanwhile sources in the north said that the agent for Monara airlines in Jaffna, Mahaluxmi stores, has informed the public in an announcement placed in the local daily the Uthayan that it has temporarily ceased its business until further notice.
