Vaharai residents celebrate New Year

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 03 January 2007, 03:31 GMT]
The Federation of People's Organisations in Vaharai with the assistance of Tamils Rehabilitation Organisation (TRO), organised on the New Year day, a volleyball tournament, to bring cheer to the people remaining in besieged Vaharai, civil sources said. Some participating teams were formed from people displaced in August .

The tournament began at 10:00 a.m Monday and ended at 5:45 p.m. Sampoor Sri Ganesha team secured the first place.

Though more than 30,000 people have been displaced from Vaharai in the past month, 15,000 still remain. Batticaloa sources said that Vaharai residents are facing severe shortage of food and other essential commodities.

Vaharai residents are yet to receive any food or other essential commodities since the last consignment allowed into Vaharai by the SLA at Mankerny, on November 29, sources said.

The SLA at Mankerny, located on the A15 route between Vaharai and Batticaloa, Valaichenai areas, has banned all traffic and transport past their camp.
