[TamilNet, Saturday, 06 January 2007, 00:23 GMT]
The Tamil Students Federation, Jaffna district branch, in a press communique issued in Jaffna Friday, warned that continuing arrests and attacks on students by Sri Lankan Forces will lead to their taking action to disrupt civil administration in Jaffna peninsula, sources in Jaffna said.

The representatives of the Federation handed over the communiqe to the local media offices and explained the reasons for their action.

  • The prevailing shortage of essential learning utensils
  • The continuing harassments by the Forces, arrests and detentions of students
  • The continuing detention of Pahirathan, a 3rd Year undergraduate of Jaffna University, arrested by Sri Lanka Army 4 months ago.
  • The arrest and disappearance of Ravi Kumar, an undergraduate of Jaffna University, who was arrested by Sri Lanka Navy at Allaippiddy when he was traveling from Nedunthivu to Jaffna.
  • The disappearance of Navesan, a student, while traveling from Vaddukkoddai to Jaffna tuition centre, and
  • The arrest of Nurubaraj, another undergraduate of Jaffna University, who was arrested by the Army at Kokkuvil last Thursday.

The student representatives said that students under these circumstances will not be able to concentrate on their studies, and appealed to all the students, government servants and the public to show their solidarity.
