SLA shelling kills 2 civilians, wounds 9 in Verugal

Two Internally Displaced Persons were killed and 9 others including two children were wounded in artillery fire by the Sri Lanka Army towards Verugal Tuesday morning, LTTE officials in Verugal told media. The civilian victims were fleeing northwards after the artillery barrage towards Vaharai Monday.

One of the civilians killed was identified as Kanthiah Ganesan, 35.

2-year-old girl Thayaparan Mathusa and 6-year-old boy Ganesan Jesu were the two children wounded in the artillery fire from Kallaru SLA base, according to the LTTE officials.

Kathamuttu Thraupathai, 28, Chandran Vasanthy, 30, and Packiyarasa Santhiran, 32, were among the 9 wounded.

The victims were staying in Soorainagar village near Verugal.

More than 500 families have taken refuge in areas that come under Echchilampattu division, north of Vaharai.
