War-front bound soldier commits suicide

An SLA soldier manning a sentry point at Mulli in Columbuthurai committed suicide late last night after he was asked by his unit to pack up for battle front duty in the Vanni.

This was revealed at the inquest held by the SLA's Military Police in Jaffna today.

The soldier had shot himself while on guard duty at a sentry point in Mulli.

Sources in Columbuthurai said that SLA soldiers in other sentry points nearby had started shooting at random thinking that the shot heard in the deceased soldier's bunker was LTTE's small arms fire.

The corporal who testified at the inquest this morning told the SLA Military Police that the soldier committed suicide because he did not want to go to the Vanni front.
