Civilians arrested in Kandy, Chilaw police divisions

Sri Lanka Government security forces in a combined cordon and search operation arrested three upcountry Tamil youths who were waiting Saturday night at 8.30 p.m.at Kandy railway station to travel to Colombo, sources said. More than 45 civilians were arrested in Chilaw in a similar operation.
The arrested youths have been identified as Madavan Naguleswaran, Madavan Maheswaran and Uthayakumar of Hatton. They are being detained at Kandy police station and are being questioned, sources said. Meanwhile, about forty-five persons were taken into custody by the Police in a cordon and search operations conducted in the suburbs of Chilaw police division Sunday morning. Although details of the ethnicity of the arrested are not fully revealed, sources in Chilaw said only some of the arrested in Chilaw are said to be Tamil civilians. Many of the arrested were said to be accused of engaging in criminal activities in the area, sources said.
