The National Patriotic Movement (NPM) Sunday made an urgent appeal to Sri Lanka's President Mahinda Rajapakse to nullify the ceasefire agreement (CFA) signed by Ranil Wickremasinghe, the then Prime Minister and Velupillai Pirapaharan, leader of LTTE, before the CFA completes five-year period on February 22, sources in Colombo said.
Wimal Weerawanse, leader of parliamentary group of the Sinhala nationalist, Marxist, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and a leader of the NPM Sunday told media persons that allowing the ceasefire agreement to continue after five years would do irreparable damage to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the island. The NPM has made a last minute appeal to Mr. Rajapakse to abrogate the ceasefire agreement in the interest of the island, he said. Mr. Weerawanse Sunday participated in the fasting campaign by the National Bhikku Front (NBF) in front of the Buddha statue located in Colombo Viharamahadevi Park. Later he held a press briefing at the site, sources said. Buddhist monks have been fasting in Colombo on rotation basis for the seventh day Sunday. Similar campaign is being held in front of Kandy Dalada Maligawa since Saturday.
