CID ordered to submit reasons for arrest of Mawbima journalist

Nimal Punchihewa, the head of Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission (SLHRC) ordered the officials of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to furnish details pertaining to the arrest of Tamil woman journalist Paremesawary Munusamy before March 20, when hearings were held Friday morning.

The police who arrested Paremeswary, officials of intelligence service, and the parents of the journalist gave evidence before the commission.

Mr.Punchihewa on hearing the evidence from them concluded that valid reasons have not been provided for the arrest and detention of Paremeswary for more than three months.

The police officials involved in the arrest were then told to submit the evidence obtained from the journalist and the reason for her arrest when the next hearings are held.

Mano Ganehan, Colombo district Member of Parliament and the president of Western Province People Front was also present during the hearings.

The journalist Paremeswary attached to a Sinhala journal named "Mawbima" (motherland) was arrested on Nov.24th at her residence.

Mawbima (mother land) is a journal has been a strong critic of government of Sri Lanka, and other leading politicians involved in bribary, corruption and anti-rights activities.
