Jaffna mail still awaits shipment in Trincomalee

[TamilNet, Saturday, 03 March 2007, 11:33 GMT]
After failing to send the accumulating backlog of ordinary letters lying in Trincomalee Main Post Office to Jaffna on the 26th February as planned, due to undisclosed reasons, the Post Master General (PMG) said another attempt will be made Sunday to send about 7 thousand parcels and mailbags by ship, sources in Trincomalee said.

A consignment of four mail bags were sent to Trincomalee post office on Friday from Colombo to be transported to Jaffna with the backlog, sources further said.

Meanwhile, the Post Master General (PMG) has instructed all post offices in future to accept only parcels weighing less than one kilogram and containing medicines, urgently needed in Jaffna.

Minister of Posts and Telecommunication, Rauff Hakeem had earlier directed the Post Master General (PMG) to take immediate steps to dispatch all mailbags and parcels to Jaffna before he returns from China, scheduled for 5 March Monday.
