Mail overflows Trinco storage, lies outside in open

[TamilNet, Monday, 05 March 2007, 11:54 GMT]
Trincomalee postal department official await the arrival of a cargo vessel "Mercs Yala" from Kankesanthurai to transport thousands of mailbags and parcels to Jaffna district, as the attempt to ship the mail before Sunday failed, sources in Trincomalee said. The backlog has been lying in Trincomalee general post office since January 13 without any vessel being assigned to take them to Jaffna, and bags overflowing the storage are now left in the open space outside the building, sources said.

The number of mailbags and parcels to be transported to Jaffna district from Trincomalee general post office has increased to over nine thousand with the arrival of four thousand such items from Colombo few days ago.

Rauff Hakeem, who was appointed Minister of Posts and Telecommunication in the recent cabinet major reshuffle instructed the Post Master General two weeks ago that the backlog of mailbags and parcels lying in Trincomalee post office should be dispatched to Jaffna before he returned from China.

Now he has returned from China after seven day-visit but mailbags and parcels are still lying in Trincomalee, sources said.
